For the development of sophisticated alloys, the steel plant at Altona has to arc melting furnaces and induction of different capacities.Furthermore, a system of AOD refining allows exceptional flexibility, enabling a capacity of 18 tonnes of liquid steel.
03un Electric Arc Furnaces – nominal capacities of 2,500, 2,500 and 6,000 kg. Maximum charge weights are 3,000, 3,000 and 9,000 kg. All furnaces have basic refractories and use 8” electrodes. Average heat time varies from 1.5 to 2.0 hours.
02un Electric Induction Furnaces – nominal capacities of 500 and 2,000 kg. per charge. The furnaces have neutral linings and heat time is 1.0 to 1.5 hours.
AOD Refining – 2,000 kg. AOD refiner for stainless steel and for the production of ingots for forge shops.
All furnaces have immersion pyrometers.
The melting process will vary according to alloy and casting being produced, however the standard process is a 2-slag process. Desoxidation is a combination of CaSi and Al. All melting is controlled by spectrometer (X-ray and optical emission).
Pouring – ALTONA uses bottom pour ladles for all pouring except some special alloys.
Overhead Cranes – The foundry lifting capacity is 25,000 kg.
Basic raw material is industrial scrap of known analysis.
